History/Key Points:
A long time ago (maybe), before Mettaton, there was a ghost. This ghost lived next door to their cousin, another ghost named Napstablook. This ghost was happy living so close to their cousin, but after their other cousin left to live inside of a training dummy, the ghost realized that they wanted more. They loved humanity, especially their television programs, and longed to perform in shows just like that.
Then, one day, they held their first Human Fanclub meeting. Unfortunately, only one other person showed up: a woman with an obsession with awful human cartoons. But the ghost was glad to have someone to talk about humans to, and they became friends.
The ghost was surprised when the woman, Alphys, showed them sketches that she had drawn up. Sketches of a robotic body! Surprise turned into excitement when Alphys offered to create the body for them so that they could live their dream of fame if, in exchange, she could present him to King Asgore as a example of her skill and add anti-human combat capabilities. The ghost decided to take Alphys' offer and disappeared without a trace.
With a new, placeholder body, the ghost, who now went by Mettaton and used male pronouns, quickly became the star he had always dreamed of being. But as his popularity rose, his friends quickly faded to the background of importance. He stopped talking to Alphys completely unless it was to ask about his new, permanent body and created many shows for the monsters of the Underground to enjoy.
But one day, something exciting happened: a human child fell into the Underground. Alphys contacted Mettaton and asked him to do her a favor: to put on a brand new kind of show should the child reach Hotland. The plan was for Mettaton to become a human killing machine after a failed 'reprogramming', allowing Alphys to swoop in and play the 'hero' to the child in order to befriend them and put some excitement into her own life.
At first, Mettaton took great enjoyment in performing in this role for the child, especially since the child was such a good sport! They went along with every scenario Mettaton could cook up. However, as the show went on, Alphys proved she wasn't cut out for show business; she stuttered on her lines when she didn't completely forget them, and she missed important cues. Mettaton grew bored of this and decided that no great 'show' was complete without a plot twist.
As the child reached the Core, Mettaton told them the truth: that everything had been orchestrated and that he had no desire to harm humans in the least. However, he had seen the child fight before, and saw they were weak. If they got through to Asgore, the king of all monsters, he would kill them, take their soul, and then destroy humanity.
Alphys managed to call the child and tell them that, when turned around, there was a switch on Mettaton's back that would make him vulnerable. The child told Mettaton there was a mirror behind him and, when he turned around to check, they flipped the switch. The switch revealed something strange and exciting: Mettaton's brand-new (and admittedly handsome) body, also known as Mettaton EX.
They preceded to fight, with Mettaton pleading for the human to give up unless they wanted humanity to perish. As they fought, his body proved to be much less sturdy in combat than his previous form, and his limbs gradually came loose and fell off until only his chest was left intact. But the showdown culminated in the most ratings Mettaton had ever gotten for a show! To celebrate, he announced that he would take a caller to talk to him on his final show.
The caller was none other than their cousin, Napstablook. Hearing Napstablook's voice again saying how much they enjoyed watching him and how he made their life exciting again, Mettaton's excitement faded into sadness. But Napstablook hung up, and Mettaton was crushed. He took more callers, and they all said the same thing: "We loved watching your show!" "We'll miss you!"
Mettaton's mind had changed. He thanked his audience and announced that his debut in the human world would have to wait. After all, humans had many celebrities and stars, but the Underground only had him. And in the fight, he had seen the child was plenty strong enough to fend for themselves against Asgore. At this moment, he admitted that the battle could not have gone on longer anyway, as the battery consumption on his new form was "inefficient". He gave the child some parting words of encouragement -- "Knock 'em dead, darling" -- and thanked his audience again before shutting down.
Alphys managed to unlock the door and was panicked to see Mettaton's chest sitting dormant, expressing relief when she realized he was just out of batteries. After seeing the child off, she took him back to her lab to make repairs just in time for all of the child's friends to interrupt their battle with Asgore. He encouraged Alphys to act on her feelings for Undyne before everyone was devoured by Flowey to re-create Asriel.
The human child, Frisk, defeated Asriel, and Mettaton returned to his old house next to Napstablook's, proudly proclaiming to them that they had reminded him how much fun it was to perform with others. He recruited Napstablook as his sound mixer and another monster, Shyren, as his back-up singer, saying that it felt long overdue for all of them to perform together. He is last seen on the stage on the surface, revealing his new form's legs attached to his old form's body.

Personality:
The key words to know when dealing with Mettaton are "arrogant", "self-absorbed", and "dramatic"'. Mettaton is, in every sense of the word, a diva who has let fame get to his head. Everything that he lends a hand in, from television shows to the hotel/restaurant in his name, is glamorous, glitzy, and over-the-top expensive, especially if it has his face on it (a steak in the shape of his face costs 1000 gold to buy). In fact, he prefers everything have his face on it; even after defeating him, in the epilogue, when asking Frisk what kind of merchandise humans might like to buy, every option has his face on it, even a toy plushie of another character.
Diva-dom includes, of course, an overinflated ego and sense of self-importance. Essentially, he's not afraid to step on people if he feels they're in his way or if he just plain doesn't like them. One of his employees, Burgerpants, mentions that Mettaton has an entire album of songs just for telling Burgerpants that he's terrible at his job. Burgerpants also mentions that Mettaton is incredibly stubborn about any changes that don't come from himself, veto-ing anything anyone tries to change without his permission. He's also totally obsessed with his own legs, often using them to gesture and point at things dramatically.
However, he isn't complete irredeemable. In a timeline where Frisk kills Mettaton, his employees mention that Mettaton hired the star-shaped door greeter because he sympathized with someone who could not find a job because they were "pointy and angular", and that he would always come in to tell everyone (except Burgerpants) that they were doing a good job when talked to afterwards. During Frisk's journey through Hotland, a lion monster outside of the opera stage mentions how nice Mettaton looked in a dress and contemplates whether he would, too. In the epilogue, going back to this monster reveals that he's wearing Mettaton's dress; Mettaton had recognized his voice as one of the callers in his boss fight and given him the dress.
He's also passionate, to say the least. He goes as far as physically fighting Frisk and continuing to fight despite losing his limbs just to keep Frisk from possibly dying to Asgore, which would lead to the destruction of humanity. Of course, his reasons aren't entirely selfless; he also wants Frisk's soul so that he can cross the barrier and become a star on the surface. He's willing to take any sort of role to keep his audience entertained, including a villain, a chef, and even one half of a pair of star-crossed lovers in an opera for the sake of entertainment.
Since fighting Frisk, he's toned it down just a little, saying himself that the little acts that he did with them in Hotland reminded him how rewarding it is to perform with others, causing him to reach back out to his cousin, Napstablook. He's a little more willing to share the spotlight, especially with close friends, and is more genuine about his appreciation for his fans. He has a tendency to refer to people with a sense of endearment, including "darling", "sweetheart", and "beauty/gentlebeauty".

Gem: Star Ruby. Because he's a star, you see. In all seriousness, Star Ruby is seen as a symbol for building self-acceptance, introspection, and, as part of the ruby family, qualities like leadership, passion, and nobility. It's also seen as a gem used to help people connect with others emotionally and make them more emotionally aware, something that Mettaton is in the process of becoming now that he's realized how many people depend on him.

As Mettaton EX, his gem is located in exactly the same spot as his core: the center of his stomach, encased in glass. In his regular box form, it is located on his back, just below his switch.

Power Considerations:

• Electric Bullet Projection - Kind of what it says on the tin. He can generate electrical bullets to attack his enemies.
• Increased Durability: thanks to his robotic body, it's harder to hurt him, especially when he's in his box-y form.
• Flight; his box form has a rocket on his underside that he can use to propel him through the air. As Mettaton EX, this migrates to the bottoms of both of his feet.
